How Much Does a Spray Tan Cost in NYC? Studio, Mobile & Bridal

By Rosie7 min read
Portrait of Rosie, the spray tan artist, in her studio

In New York City, a spray tan costs anywhere from roughly $25 for a discounted booth session to $100 or more for a custom tan from an experienced artist. Mobile tans often land somewhere around $100 per person, and bridal tans are frequently quoted privately. Rosie’s studio prices are $100 for a Spray Tan, $150 for a Spray Tan+ with a take-home kit, and $50 for Face Only.

Those numbers are a long way apart, and the gap is not random. This guide explains what each kind of tan typically costs in the city, what the money actually pays for, where Rosie sits and why, and how tipping usually works. Market figures below come from public deal sites, cost guides and published studio menus as of summer 2026. They are approximate market ranges, not quotes, and they move. For Rosie’s current menu, the services page is always the source of truth.

The four kinds of spray tan, and what they cost

1. Booth and express tans: roughly $20 to $55

You stand in an enclosed booth, nozzles spray a standard solution, and you are done in minutes. Discount-site prices in NYC tend to run from about $25 to $45 for a basic session, with premium solutions somewhat higher. Some places also sell monthly memberships, which can bring the per-tan price down if you go often.

The trade-off: one formula for everyone, nobody checking your undertone, and no one to catch the back of your knees. It can be fine for a casual top-up. It is a gamble for a wedding.

2. Custom airbrush tans at a studio: roughly $45 to $110

An artist sprays you by hand with an airbrush or a spray gun. Cost guides put typical NYC custom tans at roughly $45 to $85, and published Brooklyn studio menus run up to around $110. Here the price starts to depend on who is holding the gun: how experienced they are, whether they blend the solution for you, and how much time the appointment gets.

3. Mobile tans: often around $100 per person

The artist comes to your home, hotel or venue. Cost guides often cite something around $100 per person in NYC, and many mobile artists set a group minimum or a travel fee. You are paying for the drive, the setup and the time on site, not just the tan. If a group is coming together for a bachelorette or a bat mitzvah, read how to host a spray tan party before you compare quotes.

4. Bridal tans: often quoted privately

Bridal pricing is the least transparent part of the market. Many NYC bridal specialists list “inquire” rather than a number. A single wedding-day tan can cost about the same as any custom tan; full bridal packages with trials and on-site visits can cost several times that. The reason it varies so much is that “bridal” can mean anything from one tan to a trial, a wedding tan and a wedding-week visit.

Rosie’s prices, in full

Rosie publishes her prices, so you know before you call. As of this article:

  • Spray Tan, 20 minutes: $100. A consultation, a custom-blended solution and the tan itself.
  • Spray Tan+, 35 minutes: $150. Extra prep and contouring time, plus a take-home kit: tan-safe soap, tan extender and natural lotions to preserve the tan.
  • Face Only, 15 minutes: $50.
  • Bridal trial: $120.
  • Bridal party: $120 per person.
  • Bridal packages and family plans: custom quote. See bridal packages.
  • Mobile / on-location: five-person minimum, quoted per booking. See mobile spray tans.

A $150 deposit holds a bride’s date. Cancellations and reschedules need at least 24 hours’ notice, and a bridal deposit is forfeited inside that window. Full wording is on the policies page.

That puts Rosie toward the upper end of the ranges above. The fair question is what the extra money buys.

What you are actually paying for

Time with one artist

Rosie is a solo artist with more than ten years of experience, and she does every tan herself. You are not handed to a trainee, and the person who did your trial is the person who does your wedding tan.

A blend mixed for your skin

The solution is vegan, paraben-free and DHA-based, with no harsh additives, and it is custom-blended for each client. That is the main defense against the orange, too-dark or too-flat result that sends people searching for how to fix it. The long version is in the orange question.

A private studio

The studio in Midwood is private, with no waiting room full of strangers. For many clients that matters as much as the color.

Scheduling that fits your week

Rosie is open Sunday to Thursday 9 AM to 8 PM and Friday until an hour before sunset, and closed on Shabbat and Jewish holidays. Sunday hours and Friday-morning slots matter if your wedding, bat mitzvah party or event is on a Sunday.

“A cheap tan you have to fix is not cheap. A good one you forget about is.”

The hidden costs of a cheap tan

Price per session is only part of it. A tan that goes streaky or orange two days before an event costs you a removal session, a second tan, or an evening with an exfoliating mitt and a lot of stress. A tan that fades in four days means paying again before the week is out. With care, a good custom tan lasts about seven to ten days, and Rosie’s guide on making a spray tan last longer shows how to stretch it.

If you are weighing a booth against an airbrush artist against a bottle from the drugstore, the comparison is in spray tan vs airbrush tan.

Tipping: what is normal

There is no fixed rule, and what follows is general practice, not a policy of Rosie’s. Many people tip a spray tan artist as they would a manicurist or a hairdresser, and some add a little more for an early wedding morning or a long group session. Tipping is a thank-you. It is never a condition of good service.

For mobile and group bookings, some hosts tip once on behalf of the group rather than collecting from each guest. That is a convenience, not an expectation.

How to spend less without settling for less

  1. Time it well. One tan two days before an event beats two tans that miss it. See the Day 2 phenomenon.
  2. Do the prep. Exfoliate and shave a day ahead and arrive with clean skin. Prep problems are the most common reason for a short-lived tan.
  3. Choose the right service. For a small event, Face Only at $50 can be enough. For a vacation or a long weekend, the Spray Tan+ kit at $150 replaces products you would otherwise buy separately.
  4. Group up. If you have five or more people for the same event, a mobile booking puts everyone on one schedule and saves each guest the trip. For weddings, see bridal party spray tans.
  5. Look after it. Lukewarm showers, gentle soap, moisturizer every day. A tan extender keeps the color even as it fades; read what a tan extender is.

The short version

Booth tans cost the least and promise the least. Custom tans in NYC usually fall between about $45 and $110. Mobile tans often run about $100 a person, and bridal pricing varies the most. Rosie charges $100 for a custom tan, $150 with a take-home kit, $50 for the face, $120 per person for bridal parties, and quotes mobile and package work individually.

If you have an event coming up, the price that matters is the one for your date, your group and your skin. Call or text (917) 326-0303, or see the guides for a bachelorette, a bat mitzvah or sweet 16 or prom. No online booking, no surprises.

Quick answers

How much should I tip for a spray tan?

Tipping customs vary, and many people tip a spray tan artist the way they would a manicurist, often somewhere around 15 to 20 percent. It is a thank-you, not a requirement.

Why are some spray tans so much cheaper than others?

Cheaper tans usually mean a booth or an express service: one solution for everyone, little or no consultation, and no one checking your skin. Custom tans pay for an artist’s time and a blend mixed for you.

How much does a mobile spray tan cost?

It depends on headcount, distance and timing. Rosie’s mobile service has a five-person minimum and is quoted per booking.

Is a spray tan worth the money?

For an event with photos, most people find a custom tan worth it: it lasts about seven to ten days with care and avoids the cost and stress of fixing a bad one.
