Getting here
Rosie comes to you. On-location visits in Deal and the surrounding Monmouth County shore towns are by appointment, for groups of 5 or more, and busiest from Memorial Day to Labor Day.
Studio or mobile
Rosie travels to Deal, NJ by appointment for groups of 5 or more, quoted per booking. Fewer people? Book the Midwood studio in Brooklyn.
If you spend the summer in Deal, you already know the rhythm: Brooklyn empties out after school ends, the shore houses open up, and the simchas follow the families down Route 36. Rosie follows them too.
Rosie’s studio is in Midwood, but Deal, New Jersey is part of her regular service area, by appointment and especially in summer. There’s no salon to walk into. She comes to your house, in Deal or one of the neighboring towns, for groups of five or more. This page explains how that works, which towns it covers and how to time your tan around a shore summer.
How a shore booking works
- Five people minimum. On-location visits need at least five people. In a Deal summer house, that’s rarely a problem: the kallah, her mother, sisters, cousins and a sister-in-law visiting for Shabbat fill it quickly.
- Quoted per booking. Travel time, headcount and the day all affect the price, so Rosie quotes each visit. Bridal party tans are $120 per person; tell her who’s in the group when you call.
- By appointment. Call or text with the date, the address, the number of people and the occasion. There’s no online booking.
- Fewer than five? Tan at the Midwood studio before you drive down. A Thursday tan in Brooklyn looks its best by Shabbat at the shore.
The towns Rosie covers
Deal
The heart of it. The blocks between Norwood Avenue and the ocean, the houses along Ocean Avenue and the side streets running inland toward Route 71 are where most summer bookings come from. Deal is small and quiet; when Rosie visits, it’s usually one house and a lot of family.
Allenhurst
Just south of Deal, a small borough of Victorian houses a few blocks from the beach. Families split between Deal and Allenhurst often book together.
Long Branch, West End and Elberon
North of Deal, Long Branch covers a lot of ground: Elberon’s big houses near the beach, the West End around Brighton Avenue, and the boardwalk and Pier Village further up. Elberon is close enough to Deal that many people treat it as the same neighborhood. Both Elberon and Long Branch have NJ Transit stations on the North Jersey Coast Line, which matters if relatives are coming down from the city by train.
Ocean Township and Oakhurst
Inland and west of Deal, Ocean Township and its Oakhurst section are where many families live year-round rather than just for the summer. That makes them good for off-season bookings too: a fall wedding or a winter bat mitzvah in Monmouth County, when the beach houses are closed.
Timing a tan around a shore summer
Summer Sundays
Sunday is the busiest day of a Deal summer. Weddings, engagement parties and brunches stack up, and because Rosie is shomer Shabbat, Friday is the last chance to tan before them. Friday appointments end an hour before sunset. In June and July that’s early evening, which helps, but Friday slots still go first. If you want a Sunday-ready tan, book as soon as you have a date.
Saturday night
Summer Shabbat ends late, so a motzei Shabbat party usually starts well after dark. Tan on Thursday, and by Saturday night you’re at Day 2, the most natural point in the tan’s life.
Heat, sand and the ocean
A shore summer is hard on a tan. Heat and humidity make you sweat in the first few hours, salt water and pools dry the skin, and sand rubs. Some simple rules help: stay cool and indoors for the 8 hours while the tan develops; do your first rinse in lukewarm water with no soap; and after every beach day, rinse with fresh water, pat dry and moisturize. A spray tan has no SPF, so keep the sunscreen on. The Spray Tan + option comes with a take-home kit with tan-safe soap, an extender and natural lotions, made for exactly this kind of week.
Brides at the shore
A summer wedding at the shore follows the same plan as one in Brooklyn: a trial four to six weeks out, then the wedding tan two days before. What changes is where it happens. The trial is often done in Midwood in the spring, and the wedding-week tan at the house in Deal, with the bridal party, the mothers and the grandmothers all in one visit. Bridal trials are $120, and a $150 deposit holds the date.
For a kallah with a mikvah night that week, Rosie doesn’t give halachic rulings. The widely cited preference is tevilah first, tan after. Ask your kallah teacher or rav, and Rosie will build the schedule around whatever they tell you. See the bridal hub, the bridal party page and the kallah page for more.
After Labor Day
The shore doesn’t empty completely in September. Year-round families in Ocean Township, Oakhurst and Long Branch still have weddings, bar and bat mitzvahs and holidays in the fall and winter. Rosie serves the area by appointment all year, but summer is when she’s down most often. Outside the season, give a little more notice and expect the five-person minimum to matter more, since there are fewer summer houses full of relatives.
The summer migration
Many of the women Rosie tans in Deal are the same women she sees on Ocean Parkway the rest of the year. If you want the backstory, read From Ocean Parkway to the Jersey Shore. And for the Brooklyn half of the calendar, see the Ocean Parkway page. For group bookings anywhere, the mobile spray tan page has the details.
