Getting here

Take the B or Q north from Sheepshead Bay, Neck Road or Brighton Beach to Avenue U, Kings Highway or Avenue M. By car, head up Ocean Avenue or Coney Island Avenue; from Manhattan Beach, Oriental Boulevard to Ocean Avenue is the simplest route.

Studio or mobile

One or two people usually come to the Midwood studio. For a group of 5 or more, Rosie can come to you in Sheepshead Bay; mobile visits are quoted per booking.

Sheepshead Bay is closer to the studio than most people realize. Part of the neighborhood shares Rosie’s 11229 ZIP code, and from the fishing piers on Emmons Avenue it’s a short drive up Ocean Avenue to Midwood.

This page covers the whole southern waterfront: Sheepshead Bay proper, the quiet streets of Manhattan Beach out past Kingsborough, and Brighton Beach under the elevated tracks. They’re three very different places, but they share a beach, a season and a subway line, and that shapes when people want to tan.

Three neighborhoods, one train

Sheepshead Bay

From the Sheepshead Bay Road station, the Q heads north to Neck Road, Avenue U, Kings Highway and Avenue M. On weekdays the B express stops at Sheepshead Bay and Kings Highway, which saves a few minutes. If you’re driving from around Emmons Avenue or Nostrand, Ocean Avenue is the straight shot north.

Manhattan Beach

Manhattan Beach is a car neighborhood. There’s no station, and the walk to Sheepshead Bay Road isn’t short. Take Oriental Boulevard west and then Ocean Avenue north, and you’re at the studio with time to spare. For groups of five or more, it often makes more sense for Rosie to come to you.

Brighton Beach

From Brighton Beach Avenue, the B and Q both run north through Sheepshead Bay to Kings Highway. By car, Coney Island Avenue runs from the boardwalk all the way up through Midwood without a single turn.

The beach calendar

Living near the water changes the calendar. Inland neighborhoods tan for events; down here, a lot of women tan for the season itself.

  • Memorial Day. The weekend the beach opens is when everyone realizes how pale they are after winter. A tan on Thursday or Friday looks natural by the holiday weekend. Book a week ahead; it’s a busy few days.
  • Summer weddings on the water. Waterfront ceremonies and outdoor photos at sunset are common in this part of Brooklyn. Golden-hour light is flattering on a softer tan and harsh on a dark one, so for an outdoor wedding, go a shade lighter than you think.
  • After a vacation. A real sunburn fading in patches is a familiar August problem. A spray tan can even out the color once your skin has stopped peeling. If it’s still raw or blistered, wait; check with a doctor if you’re unsure.
  • Proms and graduations. Sheepshead Bay and the surrounding high schools all have formals in late spring. Two days before is the sweet spot.

Swimming, salt and keeping your color

If you spend your summer at the beach or the pool, your tan works harder. Salt water and chlorine dry the skin and speed up the fading. Rosie’s advice for waterfront clients is simple: no swimming for the first 8 hours, a quick fresh-water rinse after the beach, pat dry instead of rubbing, and moisturize every night. That’s exactly what the Spray Tan + kit is for: tan-safe soap, an extender and natural lotions you take home, which help the color fade evenly instead of in patches.

One thing a spray tan can’t do is protect you. It has no SPF, so keep wearing sunscreen on the sand.

Your first tan after a winter indoors

By May, most skin along the waterfront hasn’t seen the sun in months, and a deep tan on pale winter skin looks exactly like what it is. For the first tan of the season, Rosie usually mixes something lighter than you’d pick yourself. It looks believable on the boardwalk, and it fades without a hard line at the edges. Once you’ve had a real week of sun, the next tan can go deeper.

If you want color all summer, plan on a fresh tan roughly every week to ten days, since that’s how long a tan lasts with good care. Exfoliate gently the day before each new one, so the old color doesn’t build up at your knees, elbows and ankles.

Brighton Beach and the Russian-speaking community

The website is also available in Russian, so if a parent or grandmother prefers to read the details in Russian, switch the language at the top of the page. Rosie books by phone and text. Weddings, anniversaries and big birthday dinners in Brighton Beach’s restaurants bring in mothers and grandmothers who want a natural, healthy-looking glow rather than a deep tan, and that’s what she’ll mix.

Studio hours for the shore crowd

The studio is open Sunday through Thursday, 9 AM to 8 PM, and on Friday until an hour before sunset. In summer, sunset is late, so Friday afternoon appointments are possible. It’s closed on Shabbat and Jewish holidays. A Sunday at the beach after a Friday tan is close to perfect timing.

Sheepshead Bay questions

Asked by neighbors

How do I get from Sheepshead Bay to Rosie’s studio?

The B and Q run north from Sheepshead Bay Road and Neck Road to Avenue U, Kings Highway and Avenue M. Part of Sheepshead Bay shares the studio’s 11229 ZIP code, so for many clients it’s a few minutes by car.

Should I get a spray tan before going to Manhattan Beach?

It can help you feel less pale in a swimsuit, but it isn’t sun protection. Wear sunscreen as usual. Chlorine and long swims fade a tan faster, so moisturize after every beach day.

Will the ocean or a pool wash off my tan?

Not in one swim, but salt water and chlorine both speed up fading. Wait until after your first rinse (about 8 hours) before swimming, then pat dry rather than rubbing with a towel.

Can Rosie come to Manhattan Beach for a bridal party?

Yes, for groups of 5 or more. Mobile bookings are quoted per booking. Call with the date, the address and the number of people.
