How Often Should You Get a Spray Tan? Maintenance Schedules

Four women dressed up for a family celebration

If you want to look tan all the time, get a spray tan every 7 to 10 days, which matches how long a tan lasts with good care. If you tan for occasions, one tan per event is enough, booked two days before. Most people land somewhere in between: regular tans in summer, event tans the rest of the year.

Frequency isn’t really a skin question. It’s a calendar question. A tan has a natural life of about a week to ten days (the details are in our pillar guide, how long does a spray tan last), so the real decision is which days you want to be tan and how much maintenance you want between them.

The four schedules that work

1. The constant glow: every 7 to 10 days

For people who simply prefer how they look with color. You rebook as the tan reaches the end of its good-looking window, typically when your hands, feet and face start to fade. A tan extender in between helps you stretch toward ten days rather than seven.

The rhythm many regulars find easiest is the same weekday every week or so. A Thursday tan, for example, peaks on Shabbat and still looks good on Sunday. Rosie works Sunday to Thursday, 9 AM to 8 PM, and on Fridays until an hour before sunset, so an evening appointment after work is usually easy to fit.

2. The summer season

For people who want color from late spring to Labor Day and are happy to go without in winter. Tan every 7 to 10 days through the season, and expect tans to land at the shorter end of the range: more sweat, more showers, more pool and ocean. If you spend summers in Deal or along the Jersey Shore, Rosie serves that area by appointment, especially in summer.

3. The event tan

For people who tan for something: a wedding, a bar or bat mitzvah, a vort, a family photo shoot. Book so the event falls on Day 2, when the color looks most natural. For a wedding, that means a trial 4 to 6 weeks before and the real tan two days before. For weekend simchas, a Thursday tan covers Shabbat and a Sunday party.

4. The occasional top-up

For people who like a little color now and then without committing to a rhythm. A tan every few weeks, often before a trip or a long weekend. Between full tans, Rosie’s Face Only tan (15 minutes, $50) can refresh the area that fades fastest.

“Frequency isn’t really a skin question. It’s a calendar question.”

What changes the right frequency for you

  • How dry your skin is. Dry skin sheds faster, so tans fade sooner. Daily moisturizing can push you from a 7-day rhythm toward a 10-day one.
  • Your routine. Daily workouts, hot yoga, swimming, or a job that has you washing your hands constantly all shorten the cycle.
  • Your products. Exfoliating body washes, retinoids and oil cleansers speed up the fade. See the best soap and lotion after a spray tan.
  • Your shade. A deeper tan shows the fade more clearly, so people who go darker tend to rebook a little sooner.
  • Your aftercare. Short lukewarm showers, patting dry, and a tan extender make the biggest difference. All of it is in how to make a spray tan last longer.

Don’t layer: clear the old tan first

The most common maintenance mistake is booking a new tan on top of an old one that’s half gone. The leftover color clings in some places (knees, ankles, knuckles) and has vanished in others, so the fresh tan goes on over an uneven base. Clearing it first gives a cleaner result.

The day before each appointment, soak and buff evenly with an exfoliating mitt, then shave. Our guide on how to remove a spray tan walks through it. Arrive the next day with clean, bare skin.

What it costs to keep a tan going

Rosie’s prices are simple and listed on the services page. The Spray Tan is $100 for 20 minutes. The Spray Tan+ is $150 for 35 minutes and adds extra prep and contouring time plus a take-home kit with tan-safe soap, a tan extender and natural lotions to preserve the tan. Face Only is $50.

That makes the math easy to plan around. On a 10-day rhythm, you’re looking at about three tans a month. On an event schedule, it’s one tan per occasion. A sensible approach is to choose the Spray Tan+ when you need a tan to carry through several days, and the standard Spray Tan for a single evening.

A note on frequency and safety

DHA, the active ingredient in spray tans, is approved by the FDA as a color additive for external use on the skin, and should be kept away from the eyes, lips and mucous membranes. If you have a skin condition, are pregnant, or have questions about how often is right for you, ask your doctor or dermatologist. Our safety guide, is spray tanning safe, goes into the research.

Planning around Shabbat and holidays

Rosie is shomer Shabbat and closed on Shabbat and Jewish holidays. Before a three-day Yom Tov, or a busy stretch like the weeks before Pesach, the calendar has fewer open days, so book ahead. If you’re traveling, spray tan before vacation has the timing for flights and beach days.

Whatever rhythm you choose, the routine around it matters more than the exact number of days. Call or text Rosie at (917) 326-0303 to set up your next appointment; there’s no online booking.

Quick answers

Can you get a spray tan two days in a row?

It isn’t a good idea. A second layer on top of a tan that’s still settling tends to look uneven and can read too dark. If the first tan isn’t right, call your artist instead of re-spraying yourself.

Is it bad to get a spray tan every week?

Many regulars tan every week to ten days as a maintenance rhythm. If you have a skin condition, are pregnant, or have health questions about frequent use, ask your doctor or dermatologist first.

Should I exfoliate between spray tans?

Yes, the day before each new appointment. Clearing the old, fading tan lets the new one go on evenly instead of layering over patches.

Do I need a trial before a regular spray tan?

Not for an everyday tan. A trial makes sense before a wedding or a big event; Rosie’s bridal trial is $120 and is booked 4 to 6 weeks before.
