Spray Tan Smell: Why It Happens and How to Get Rid of It

The spray tan smell comes from DHA, the active ingredient, reacting with the proteins in the top layer of your skin. It’s the same family of reaction that browns bread, and it produces a slightly biscuity, earthy scent while the tan develops. It peaks over the first 8 hours, fades sharply after your first rinse, and can briefly return when you sweat.

It’s one of the most common questions people ask after their first tan, usually at about 11 PM, from bed. The short version: it’s normal, it’s temporary, and there’s a lot you can do to keep it down.

Where the smell comes from

DHA (dihydroxyacetone) is a simple sugar. When it meets the amino acids in your outermost layer of skin, it sets off what chemists call a Maillard reaction: a chain of reactions that produce brown pigments. It’s the same broad chemistry behind toasted bread and roasted coffee. We go into it more in the orange question.

Along the way, that reaction gives off small amounts of volatile compounds, and those are what you smell. It isn’t the fragrance in the solution and it isn’t a sign of a cheap product. Any tan built on DHA produces some of it, because it’s a by-product of the color forming.

“The smell is a by-product of the color forming. No DHA, no tan.”

Why some people notice it more

Two people with the same tan can have very different experiences of the smell. A few reasons:

  • Skin chemistry. The reaction depends on the amino acids and conditions on your skin, which vary from person to person.
  • Depth of the tan. A deeper shade uses more DHA, which means more reaction happening at once.
  • Heat and sweat. Warmth speeds up evaporation, so the scent carries more on a humid summer evening or under a duvet.
  • Your nose. Some people are simply more sensitive to this kind of scent, and you’re always closest to your own skin.

How long it lasts

The smell follows the development. It builds over the first few hours, stays noticeable until your first rinse at around 8 hours, and then drops off a cliff once the bronzer and surface residue go down the drain. On some people, a faint version shows up again with sweat or a hot shower over the next day or two. By midweek, most people can’t smell it at all.

How to get rid of the spray tan smell

Time your appointment

If the smell bothers you, book so the development happens when you’re home and not around other people: an afternoon or early-evening appointment, then a quiet night in. Rosie’s studio in Midwood is open Sunday to Thursday until 8 PM, which makes evening tans easy.

Rinse on schedule

Don’t leave the tan on much longer than its development time “to be safe.” Once you’re past the roughly 8 hours, rinse with lukewarm water and no soap. That single rinse takes most of the smell with it.

Then shower gently, not hard

From the next shower on, a gentle, sulfate-free wash is enough to keep you fresh without stripping the tan. Long, hot, scrubbing showers will take the smell, and a good part of your tan along with it. Our guide to soap and lotion after a spray tan lists what to look for.

Change into clean clothes after the rinse

Whatever you wore while developing has absorbed some of the scent. After your first rinse, put on fresh, loose clothes rather than the same sweatshirt.

Wash the sheets

If you slept in your tan, your sheets and pillowcase will hold both the smell and some bronzer. Wash them soon, in cool water; our guide on how to remove a spray tan has a section on sheets and clothes. An old, dark set of sheets for tan nights saves trouble.

Air the room

Open a window or run a fan in the bedroom overnight. It helps, and it keeps you cooler, which means less sweat while the tan develops.

Moisturize with something you like the smell of

After the first rinse, a lightly scented, water-based lotion can help cover any faint scent that lingers. If your skin is sensitive, stick to fragrance-free and accept a little toast for a day.

The smell after workouts

The most common “it’s back!” moment comes at the gym or on a hot walk down Ocean Parkway in August. Sweat brings a hint of it back to the surface. Rinse off soon after, pat dry, and wear breathable layers. It fades faster with each day. For more on exercising with a tan, see working out, sweating and swimming with a spray tan.

Can a solution be smell-free?

Some tanning products add fragrance to mask the scent, and you may see them marketed as odor-free. Fragrance can soften what you notice, but it can’t stop a DHA reaction from producing its by-products. If you’re sensitive to scents or fragrance, tell Rosie when you book. Her solution is vegan, paraben-free and custom-blended for each client, so your skin and preferences are part of the conversation from the start.

When a smell isn’t normal

A biscuity scent is expected. Itching, burning, a rash or swelling are not. If your skin reacts, rinse with cool water and check with your doctor or dermatologist.

The smell is a small price for a color that looks like you. Follow the habits in how to make a spray tan last longer and you’ll be the only one who knows it was ever there. To see how Rosie works, or to book, start on the home page or call or text (917) 326-0303.

Quick answers

How long does the spray tan smell last?

It’s strongest during the roughly 8 hours of development and drops sharply after your first rinse. A faint version can come back with sweat or a hot shower for a day or two.

Does the spray tan smell mean my tan went wrong?

No. The smell comes from the DHA reaction that creates the color, so some scent is normal with any DHA-based tan. It says nothing about whether your color is right.

Can other people smell my spray tan?

During development, people close to you may notice it. After the first rinse, most people won’t, especially if you shower with a gentle wash and wear fresh clothes.

Can I wear perfume with a spray tan?

Wait until after your first rinse. After that, a little on your pulse points is fine; avoid drenching large areas, since alcohol-based sprays can dry the skin.
