Wait about 8 hours after a spray tan before you shower. Rosie’s solution develops over roughly that long, and rinsing early cuts the reaction short, which can leave the tan lighter and uneven. After the 8 hours, take a quick lukewarm rinse with no soap.
This article is about the clock: why 8 hours, what happens if you break it, and how to plan your appointment so the wait is easy. If you want to know how to actually take that first shower, water temperature, towels, hair and all, that is its own guide: How to Take Your First Shower After a Spray Tan.
Why the wait is 8 hours
Two things are on your skin when you leave the studio. The first is a cosmetic guide color, the light bronze tint that shows where the solution went. The second is the DHA, the active ingredient, which reacts with the surface layer of your skin to produce the actual tan.
That reaction is not instant. It builds over hours. Rosie’s solution develops over about 8 hours, and during that time the tan you will actually wear is forming underneath the guide color. A shower washes the unreacted solution away along with the guide color. Whatever had developed by then is what you keep.
“The tan you keep is the tan that formed before the water hit.”
What happens if you shower too early
Rinse at hour three and you will usually see two things a day later. The overall color is lighter than it would have been, because the reaction was stopped partway. And it can be uneven, because water doesn’t hit everywhere at once. The shoulders and chest, where the shower lands first, can end up lighter than the backs of the legs.
The same logic applies to anything wet during those hours:
- Rain. Drops leave pale spots where they landed.
- Sweat. Beads and drips can streak, especially down the back, chest and inner arms.
- Washing dishes or a toddler’s bath. Splashes on the forearms show up later as light marks.
- Swimming. Not until after the first rinse at the very least; more on that in Working Out, Sweating & Swimming With a Spray Tan.
Washing your hands in the meantime
You will need to at some point. Rinse only your palms and fingertips under the tap, keep the water off the backs of your hands and your wrists, and pat dry. A hand wipe on the palms works too. Hands are one of the first places a tan shows uneven wear, so a little care here pays off for the whole week.
Is longer than 8 hours okay?
Yes. Eight hours is what the solution needs; going past it, for example by sleeping in your tan and rinsing the next morning, is a normal way to do it. The point is not to rinse sooner. If you do wait longer, stay in loose, dark clothes, keep cool, and use dark or older sheets, since the guide color can transfer to fabric before the rinse. Sleepwear and what to wear home are in What to Wear To (and After) Your Spray Tan.
A note on rapid tans
Some studios offer rapid or express solutions designed to be rinsed sooner. Development times vary by product, so if you had a tan somewhere else, follow that studio’s instructions for that formula. Everything in this article refers to Rosie’s solution and its roughly 8-hour development.
How to time your appointment around the wait
The easiest 8 hours are the ones you sleep through. A few patterns that work well:
- Evening appointment, morning rinse. Book in the late afternoon or evening, have dinner in loose clothes, sleep in your tan, rinse when you wake up. Rosie’s Sunday through Thursday hours run until 8 PM, so this works on most weeknights.
- Morning appointment, evening rinse. Book first thing, spend a quiet, cool day at home or at a desk, and rinse after dinner. Good for people who don’t want to sleep in it.
- Two days before the event. For anything that matters, the tan goes on two days before, because a spray tan looks its most natural on Day 2. That leaves the whole first day for the wait and the rinse, and the event lands on the best day.
Fridays and Shabbat
Rosie’s Friday hours run from 9 AM until one hour before sunset. If you keep Shabbat, think about where the 8 hours and your first rinse fall relative to candle lighting before you pick a Friday slot, especially in winter when Shabbat comes in early. If the question is halachic rather than practical, ask your rav — Rosie will build the schedule around whatever they tell you.
Brides
A wedding tan goes on two days before, so the first rinse happens the day before the wedding, not the morning of. There is no rush and no risk of a rinse running into hair and makeup. The full bridal schedule, including the trial 4–6 weeks out, is on the bridal page.
If you already showered too early
It happens: a forgotten gym class, a toddler with a cup of water, a sudden downpour on Coney Island Avenue. Don’t panic, and don’t try to fix it on the spot. A few practical steps:
- Pat the wet areas dry gently. Don’t rub.
- Stay dry for the rest of the 8 hours to let the remaining solution develop.
- Wait until Day 2 to judge it; the color often looks more even once it settles.
- If there is a noticeable patch or spot, call or text Rosie and ask before you scrub at it yourself.
Scrubbing a light spot to blend it almost always makes it bigger. Time and a calm look in daylight usually make it smaller.
After the first shower
Once the first rinse is done, showers are part of normal life again, with a few habits that keep the color around for its full 7–10 days: short, lukewarm showers, a gentle soap, patting dry and moisturizing every day. The take-home kit with Spray Tan+ includes a tan-safe soap, a tan extender and natural lotions for exactly this stretch; you can compare options on the services page.

Quick answers
What happens if you shower too early after a spray tan?
The DHA has not finished developing, so the tan can come out lighter than it should and uneven where water hit first. Wait the full 8 hours if you can.
Can I shower 4 hours after a spray tan?
With Rosie’s solution, it is too soon. It develops over about 8 hours, and rinsing halfway through cuts that short. If a different studio used a rapid formula, follow their instructions for that product.
Does the 8-hour wait apply to a face-only spray tan?
Yes. The face develops on the same clock, so hold off on washing it, skincare and makeup until your first rinse, then splash with lukewarm water rather than a cleanser.
Should I shower before my spray tan appointment?
Yes, if you like. Shower that morning with a gentle soap and dry off completely, with no lotion, deodorant, perfume or makeup afterward. Exfoliating and shaving belong the day before.
