Spray Tan Before Shabbat and Yom Tov: A Timing Guide

By Rosie5 min read
Portrait of Rosie in her studio

For a spray tan before Shabbat, book early enough that the colour can develop (about eight hours) and your first rinse is finished before candle lighting. Rosie’s Friday appointments end an hour before sunset. In summer a Friday-morning tan usually works; in winter, when Shabbat comes in the late afternoon, book Thursday.

Rosie is shomer Shabbat, so this is how the studio already runs, not a special arrangement. Below are the hours that matter, how they play out for Sunday weddings and three-day Yom Tov, and the 2027 wedding calendar around Sefirah and the Three Weeks. None of it is a ruling. On anything halachic, ask your rav, and Rosie will build the schedule around whatever they tell you.

The rule: develop, rinse, then light candles

A spray tan develops in the skin over about eight hours. After that you rinse: lukewarm water, no soap, pat dry. That rinse should land before candle lighting on Friday or erev Yom Tov, so nothing about your tan depends on showering on Shabbat or Yom Tov, which raises its own questions.

Here is what that looks like with real times from Hebcal for Midwood (11229):

  • Winter: Friday, December 18, 2026. Candle lighting is 4:12 PM. A 9 AM tan would not be ready to rinse until about 5 PM, after Shabbat has begun. Book Thursday instead.
  • Summer: Friday, June 25, 2027. Candle lighting is 8:12 PM. A 9 AM tan is ready to rinse around 5 PM, with hours to spare.

Between those extremes, check the candle-lighting time for your week on hebcal.com and count back eight hours plus time to rinse and get ready. If it is tight, take the Thursday slot. Rosie will tell you if a Friday time does not leave enough room.

Aftercare that never falls on Shabbat

Normal tan aftercare includes daily moisturising. On Shabbat that runs into a halachic question: applying and smoothing creams and lotions is discussed under memareach (smoothing), and sources differ on thin or liquid products, sprays and powders. See, for example, Peninei Halakha and the OU Torah discussion of suntan lotion. Whether you may use a particular product on Shabbat is a question for your rav.

The studio’s plan avoids the question entirely:

  • No tanning on Shabbat or Yom Tov, ever.
  • First rinse done and skin moisturised before candle lighting.
  • No aftercare step that needs lotion or a shower on Shabbat. A well-moisturised tan comes through a day or two without it.
  • Moisturise again on motzei Shabbat.

Sunday weddings and the Day-2 math

Many weddings in our community are on Sunday, which puts Shabbat between the tan and the chuppah. A tan looks most natural on Day 2, so for a Sunday wedding the ideal is Friday.

  • Summer Sunday wedding: Friday-morning tan, rinse Friday afternoon, wedding on Day 2.
  • Winter Sunday wedding: Thursday tan, rinse Thursday night or Friday morning, wedding on Day 3. The colour is still lovely on Day 3; it is a small trade for a calm Friday.
  • Motzei Shabbat wedding: Thursday tan, rinse before Shabbat, wedding on Day 2.

For a kallah, the tevilah night also has to fit into this week. The widely cited preference is tevilah first, then the tan, and your night comes from your kallah teacher. How the two fit together is in spray tan before the mikvah, and the full appointment schedule is on the kallah spray tan timeline page.

Yom Tov and three-day Yom Tov

The studio is closed on Yom Tov, and erev Yom Tov follows the same rule as Friday: rinse before candle lighting. The harder case is when Yom Tov runs into Shabbat or Shabbat runs into Yom Tov, so the tan has to last two or three days without its usual care. Tan on the last weekday before, moisturise generously before candle lighting, and expect a little softening by the end. Shimmer and body makeup are not a substitute: they rub off on clothes and need washing off.

2027 Yom Tov dates to plan around (diaspora)

  • Pesach: Thursday, April 22 to Thursday, April 29. The first two days run straight into Shabbat.
  • Shavuot: Friday–Saturday, June 11–12, running into Shabbat. Tan by Thursday, June 10, early enough to rinse before candle lighting.
  • Rosh Hashana: Saturday–Sunday, October 2–3, beginning Friday evening.
  • Yom Kippur: Monday, October 11.
  • Sukkot: from Saturday, October 16; Shemini Atzeret Saturday, October 23, and Simchat Torah Sunday, October 24.

Before Pesach: questions about the solution

Clients sometimes ask whether a tan is “kosher for Pesach.” We don’t use that phrase, because only a kashrut agency certifying a specific product can say it. Star-K has written that the common custom allows non-kosher ingredients in products applied to the skin, and its article on cosmetics explains the reasoning. For Pesach, some authorities and families are stricter about chametz-derived ingredients such as grain-based alcohol. If that matters in your home, ask Rosie for the ingredient list and take it to your rav.

Weddings are not held on Shabbat, Yom Tov or Chol HaMoed, which is part of why the weeks after each chag fill up quickly.

Sefirah, the Three Weeks and the wedding season

Many communities do not hold weddings during parts of Sefirat HaOmer and the Three Weeks. Customs differ between Ashkenazim and Sephardim and between families, so treat this as a map of the common customs and follow your family’s minhag and your rav.

Sefirat HaOmer

  • Sephardi custom (Shulchan Aruch): generally no weddings from Pesach until the morning of the 34th day of the Omer. Some Sephardi communities allow weddings from Lag BaOmer.
  • Ashkenazi customs: either from Pesach until Lag BaOmer, or the “second half” custom from Rosh Chodesh Iyar until shortly before Shavuot (3 Sivan), except Lag BaOmer itself. Some families keep the whole period.

In 2027: Rosh Chodesh Iyar is May 7–8, Lag BaOmer is Tuesday, May 25, the 34th day of the Omer is Wednesday, May 26, and 3 Sivan is Tuesday, June 8. Background: Peninei Halakha and Ohr Somayach.

The Three Weeks and the Nine Days

  • Ashkenazi custom: no weddings from 17 Tammuz through Tisha B’Av.
  • Sephardi custom (Shulchan Aruch): weddings are generally avoided from Rosh Chodesh Av through Tisha B’Av. Some Sephardi families avoid the whole Three Weeks as well.

In 2027: 17 Tammuz is Thursday, July 22; Rosh Chodesh Av is Wednesday, August 4; and Tisha B’Av is Thursday, August 12, with the fast beginning the evening before. Background from the OU. Please confirm every date on hebcal.com before you print an invitation.

If Shabbat falls in the middle of sheva brachot, the same timing applies to a midweek top-up; see keeping your glow through sheva brachot. And for the whole engagement in order, start with the kallah beauty timeline.

Quick answers

Can I get a spray tan on Friday before Shabbat?

Yes, if there is time for the colour to develop and for your first rinse before candle lighting. In summer a Friday-morning tan usually works; in winter, book Thursday.

Can I moisturise my spray tan on Shabbat?

That is a question for your rav. Sources discuss creams and lotions on Shabbat under smoothing (memareach) and differ on thinner products. The simple plan is to moisturise well before Shabbat and again after.

Is Rosie open on Shabbat or Yom Tov?

No. Rosie is shomer Shabbat. The studio is closed on Shabbat and Jewish holidays, and Friday appointments end one hour before sunset.

When should I book a spray tan before a three-day Yom Tov?

On the last weekday before it, early enough to rinse before candle lighting. Plan for the tan to go about 72 hours without your usual aftercare.
