Kallah · The week around the wedding
Spray tan for henna party nights, the vort and sheva brachot
The wedding is one night. The henna, the engagement party and seven nights of sheva brachot are the rest of the photos. Rosie plans tans for the kallah, her mother and her sisters across all of them, with Shabbat and tevilah in mind.

Henna night
A spray tan for a henna party
Only where it is your family’s custom, and on your family’s terms.
The henna is closely tied to Moroccan, Yemenite, Iraqi and other Mizrahi and North African families, and plenty of mixed-heritage couples hold one too. It is not a universal Syrian custom, and it is not a fixed ritual either: some families hold it shortly before the wedding, some around the Shabbat before, and in some modern Moroccan weddings it comes afterwards. Tell Rosie which night yours is and where the henna will go (palms only, or hands, wrists and feet), and the plan follows from that.
Tan first, or henna first?
For the same patch of skin, henna goes on first and the tan works around it. Tan sprayed over a fresh design can soften its contrast, and the exfoliation a tan needs can fade the stain. So a kallah who wants to glow at her henna usually has her tan about two days before the party, rinsed and settled before the paste goes on. Her wedding tan then goes on two days before the chuppah, with Rosie working lightly around the design. The step-by-step version, with three sample weeks, is in henna and spray tan in the same week.
What to tell each artist
Tell your henna artist you will have a tan on, and when it went on. Tell Rosie where the design is and how fresh it will be on the day of your wedding tan, and skip scrubbing those areas when you prep. If you have photos of the design, bring them. Your henna artist is the one to ask how long to leave the paste and how to care for the stain; Rosie only needs to know where not to go heavy.
When the henna is close to tevilah
If a tan for the henna would still be on your skin at tevilah, ask your kallah teacher or rav before booking it. Yoatzot Halacha has written separately about henna on the hands at the mikvah, and the widely cited preference for a kallah’s spray tan is tevilah first, then tan. Rosie will not ask about your cycle. She only needs to know which days to avoid.
Engagement
The vort, the l’chaim and engagement parties
Engagement parties tend to arrive fast. A l’chaim can be called the same week a couple decides, and a vort or engagement party follows soon after, usually with a photographer and every aunt in the room. Call Rosie the moment you have a date. A Face Only (15 min) is the quickest way to bring your face and neck up to the colour you want in photos, and a full Spray Tan (20 min) does the rest if you have two days’ notice.
An engagement tan is also a low-stakes first look. If you have never had a spray tan, it tells you how your skin takes colour, months before the decisions that matter. It does not replace the bridal trial ( $120) four to six weeks before the wedding, where the shade is chosen against your gown.
Sheva brachot
Keeping the colour even all week
Seven nights of meals, with the same people looking at you each evening.
A wedding tan usually lasts 7 to 10 days with care, which carries it through sheva brachot, but it does not fade evenly. Hands and wrists go first, from all the washing. Elbows, knees and anywhere a strap or a bag rubs follow. The face holds up well for a few days and then starts to look a shade lighter than the neck.
Help it last
- Rinse lukewarm, pat dry and moisturise every day. The Spray Tan + (35 min, $150) comes with tan-safe soap, a tan extender and natural lotions for exactly this week.
- Skip scrubs, exfoliating mitts and long hot showers until you are ready to let the tan go.
- After hand-washing, dry gently and use a little lotion when you can.
A midweek top-up
A top-up is optional. If one meal matters most, book about two days before it. Most kallahs choose a Face Only ($50), since at a seated dinner the face, neck and hands are what people see; a light full Spray Tan ($100) evens out everything else. Rosie usually goes a touch lighter than the wedding shade so the new layer blends with what is left rather than building up in patches. If a Shabbat sheva brachot falls in the middle, the top-up needs to be developed and rinsed before candle lighting, and your aftercare should not depend on anything over Shabbat. More detail is in spray tan for sheva brachot.
Mothers and sisters
Tans for the women in the family
Mothers, sisters, grandmothers and mechutanot are in as many photos as the kallah, often more. Rosie blends for each woman separately, so a grandmother can have a soft, barely-there shade beside a younger sister who wants something deeper, and nobody looks matched-from-a-bottle.
For the wedding itself, bridal party tans are $120 per person. For a henna night or an engagement party, each woman books her own Spray Tan or Face Only; for a bigger family, ask Rosie about a family plan, which she quotes individually. For groups of 5 or more, she can come to a home in Brooklyn or to Deal, NJ, quoted per booking. Married women in the family who have a mikvah night coming up can simply mention a day to work around, and ask their own rav or yoetzet if they have a question. Mothers will find more on the mother of the bride spray tan page.
Booking
Call or text Rosie at (917) 326-0303 with every date at once: engagement party, henna, Shabbat kallah, wedding and the sheva brachot meals you care about. Planning the week in one call is much easier than booking it night by night. Please cancel or reschedule at least 24 hours ahead. The full week-by-week schedule is on the kallah spray tan timeline.
Questions
Henna and sheva brachot FAQ
My henna is the night before my tevilah. Can I still have a tan for it?
That one is for your kallah teacher or rav, not the studio. Ask whether a tan on your skin at tevilah is a concern in your case. If it is, a Face Only glow for the henna and a full tan after tevilah is one way round it.
Can my mother and sisters tan on the same day as me?
Usually, yes, if you book together and early. For groups of 5 or more, Rosie can also come to you, quoted per booking.
Will a tan stain my henna outfit or a white tablecloth?
The cosmetic guide colour can transfer until your first rinse, so wear something dark and loose straight after the appointment. Once you have rinsed and the colour has developed, transfer is rarely a problem.
I am a guest, not the kallah. When should I book?
Two days before the event, like the bride. If you are going to several events in one week, tell Rosie which one matters most and she will time it for that.
Is there a price for a whole family?
Family plans are quoted individually. Call Rosie with the number of people and the dates, and she will put a plan together.
